Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve has been a protected no-take marine zone since 2002, and the underwater life here reflects it. Eastern blue groper, weedy sea dragons, Port Jackson sharks, giant cuttlefish and the occasional turtle move through the rocky reefs and sea grass meadows of the bay with the ease of creatures that have never had reason to be cautious. It is one of the finest snorkelling spots in New South Wales, fifteen minutes on foot from Elysium Manly.
Guided tours run daily from Shelly Beach in morning and afternoon sessions, led by qualified local instructors – all equipment, safety briefing and in-water supervision included. Tours suit ages six and up, from first-time snorkellers to confident ocean swimmers.
The guides are known locally as the mermaids. They have earned it.
