Some places earn their charm quietly, over decades. Fairy Bower Rockpool is one of them.
Built in 1929 by the residents of Manly and nestled into the rock shelf of Cabbage Tree Bay along Marine Parade, this triangular sea pool is Sydney's smallest – just twenty metres across – and among its most loved. The water is calm, the setting protected, and the pace entirely your own. Families come here with children. Others come simply to sit at the edge and let the afternoon pass.
Presiding over the rockpool's rim are Helen Leete's Sea Nymphs – or Oceanides – a series of tall, semi-figurative sculptures that seem to rise naturally from the stone. Leete's work appears throughout Sydney, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, but here the figures feel particularly at home, as though the landscape shaped them rather than the other way around.
Beyond the pool's edge, the waters of Cabbage Tree Bay are considered some of Sydney's finest for snorkelling – clear, sheltered, and rich with marine life. Changing facilities and amenities are nearby.
Fairy Bower sits midway along the coastal walk between Manly Beach and Shelly Beach – a fourteen-minute stroll from Elysium Manly, and one well worth taking.
